Our son (7) is just starting out with Nerf. This is his 4th shooter, and the 1st to be automatic (or semi-automatic). Although personally I think it takes a bit of the fun away, ... it's still cool that you don't need to cock the gun to arm it. It depends on your perspective, I guess,... cocking the gun looks and feels so cool, and adds some of the playing drama, and role playing,... on the other hand, being able to shoot rounds faster then you can cock to arm, is pretty cool, when you need it, ... they'll be happy to have this shooter with them, for those fierce battle moments. They'll also need to have sufficient darts to reload, since this carries 10 darts, but shoots very fast. You need extras to reload. It's perfect for younger players that may have a hard time cocking the regular Nerf markers. Also, I'm thinking once you start with Nerf, I doubt it you'll be carrying just one marker.
